My classmates and I formed an independent study class named "Character Study." The class was all about how we choose to represent people in a portrait. I chose to photograph Sheila Hartley and the member's of her family.

These portraits depict Sheila Hartley and her children. They are an examination of traits, tangible and otherwise, that link a mother to her family.

In 1961, when Sheila was 17, she gave birth to her first child Howard. Her last child Doug, was born in 1976 when Sheila was 32. Sheila and her children have lived in Ohio for most of their lives.

My portraiture class the assignment this week was to photograph a portrait in two photographs without showing a face. I know, I goofed in the last one, but it's a photograph of a photograph of the very first cigarette Al Yager smoked, and the very last (at that moment). It was definitely a good assignment, to focus on the details of a person. With close examinations, there is a lot of story to tell. The images were all taken in Michigan. I went with Sheila Hartley (third dyptic down) to photograph/visit/meet/learn from her family there.

In the week-long break between school quarters, Craig and I hit the road. Passed landscapes while driving is one of the more pacifying things for me. Photographing it was a way to appreciate the small and wonderful. Below is a paragraph I wrote as an exercise for my feature writing class.

The neon glow in the horizon expands into the sky as Craig Edelman approaches his destination. His car is dirty from the day of travel. Pistachio shells fill both cup holders at his side. Just a moment ago he silenced the car from the techno beats playing on the stereo. Instead, he listens to the musical rhythms from the cars that pass along him on the I-65 South. Outside the car window, a sign reads, “Nashville, 27 miles.”

I'm cutting a multimedia piece about Kyle Russell. He's 21 and lives in Albany. Kyle is the very first person I photographed while at OU. Last September I was daunted and excited about the program set before me. I ventured to the soccer fields in Albany to see what I might find. Low and behold Kyle was kicking a soccer ball around with a buddy. At that point he was attending Rio Grande University. He's since dropped out and decided that enlisting in the Army might be his best option. Should he choose to enlist, he would follow in the footsteps of his family tree. The legacy of war. He is still undecided. His medical hold won't be up till April 1.

This quarter our class assignment was to choose a story within the United States and spend ten days going after it. I decided to go to Phoenix, Arizona to cover a story about undocumented youth who moved to the States with their families. I found them to be incredibly determined and inspiring.

I'm currently immersed in phase two of the quarter: edit, prepare and publish.

Winter quarter has only just begun

Today I visited with Shiela Hartely. She's recently retired and enjoying the freedom to do as she pleases. Moments after being let into her home she reminded me that I should know not to knock. Just come in. I found her in pajamas. She often comments on the pleasure she feels in deciding (on her own) that she will dress or not.

Her house is insulated. Plastic covers the windows. Sheila stays warm inside. Smoking cigarettes. Holding them in her feminine way. Outside, on her patio a rug becomes covered with snow.

This is Ashley Smith. She's a creative high school'er. Always drawing portraits with pencil or writing poetry.

Ghana

Over break I traveled to Ghana. The trip was thanks to my beau who went to continue the momentum for his NGO's latest development. After photographing for school in Ohio, it felt a positive challenge to photograph abroad. I didn't take my first frames until two days after arrival. These first frames are from the beach shore in Accra.

Steven in the photo above, had the identical shape of my big toe. I never thought I would find my toe twin.

While in Accra, towards the beginning of the trip, I was purchasing a Ghanaian newspaper when Comfort Esere, in the image below, came into the shop with her friend's son Emaneul Fiedzinu. She noticed my camera and requested to be photographed. I was surprised to see just how many people, upon discovery of the camera I carried, asked to have their photo "captured."

We took a weekend trip to Tafi Atome, located in the Volta Region of Ghana.

Francis, in the blue and white shirt, was taken to photography. He had requested that I capture his picture while he held his younger sister "small Kathy." His hand jet upwards when he noticed that I was taking a horizontal photograph.

He wanted me to capture a vertical image.

Francis and I passed my camera back and forwards. Below are a few of his that I share.

We took one last weekend trip to Sunyani and spent a night in Kumasi along the way.

First Quarter

I blame my loca-busy quarter for the lack of blog updates. The good news is that I'm working on stories that make me feel motivated and inspired to learn more. Above Sheila Hartley laughs with her best gal pal while playing Bingo in her humble abode. She's been working since the age of 11 and retired this month. In the middle is Jimmy Russel, a WWII vet. He lives next-door to his son Steve, a Vietnam vet and grandson Kyle who is bound for Afghanistan in February. The third image is of Eaven Kuenle racing her dad into bed. She and her twin sister are quite possibly the cutest girls in Ohio.

Leaving a place lends itself to eyes of new wonder. Met some true jewels of the area yesterday. I'm bound for San Francisco tomorrow. Then, in one-week I'll be back at school.

One Week Left

This last week at the Register has been busied with school sport photo days, festivals and of course flag waving all the way through. The assignment at a school sport's day consists mostly of mug shots of football players. The paper uses these in case the player makes a stellar play in the season. From these I noticed the popularity of Justin Beiber haircuts. Also, Silly Bandz seem to be falling out of fashion.

Photographing a Demolition Derby was fun. I've never experienced such destruction of car + motor fuel. By the end of the evening I had a juicy coat of mud and knowledge that there is a community for everything... if you can think of it, there is probably a group for it.

Towards the top there is an image of a man carrying a cross through the outskirts of Sandusky. He heard a calling that he should walk home with a cross. I walked with the man for a little while and in that time I heard countless honks in support and one man even stopped to gift the cross carrying walker with food and ten dollars. His popularity surely soared in Sandusky, Ohio.

Entering the last week here at the Register. Trying to soak in the jewels found in the daily's of a paper. I'm starting to look forward to another year at OU. Having the freedom of time is precious.

Inspired by some recent work I have been looking at (Jacqueline Bates and Laura Woolf to name a couple) I put together my own 'tu's'. Each diptych is from one assignment. My friend, Jennie Eskin (now Jennie Ekdahl) of 17 years got married this past Saturday. It's amazing to see the marital unity of a friend that I met back when pogs were in style. On her wedding day she was elated. She was married in our hometown of Santa Barbara which was plagued Saturday by what Santa Barbarians have coined as "June Gloom". The ceremony took place outside, and like many other Santa Barbara summer days, the sky was covered in clouds. I stood, happy that the sun wasn't out to create harsh shadows in the photographs. But, just as the bride and groom exchanged their "I do's" the sun cracked through the clouds and created a rainbow behind them. Epic combination. Standing among the other bridesmaids I snapped a mental image I plan to keep.

Deadlines

Deadlines are something to get used to. The story at a newspaper is done, because (usually) it has to go into print for readers tomorrow. Trouble is that some stories seem to need longer.

The last two photos in this post are from a family in Sandusky that is facing foreclosure. The woman in the left of the last photo, LeAnn, has learned from this experience that she will ask more questions. The man on the right, Derrick, spent several years in the Navy. There is a photo of Derrick in uniform hanging on the wall to his left. After serving so much time in the Navy he feels that this foreclosure is a "big slap in the face." Their two kids are young and most likely unaware of this that is going on.

Today was the Fourth of July and in the land of a vanishing industry and rising unemployment people went crazy with flag and USA paraphernalia. People flooded the water line to watch Cedar Point blast a few fireworks. Disappointment roared the crowd after the questionable finale. The moment the fireworks ended a mother behind me said, "ok, here comes the finale." Maybe hindsight made last years bigger? Or, maybe everyone is saving pennies?

The baseball photos are from a local team Post 83. I've gone to a number of their game and now showing up to their dugout is familiar. No matter if it's photographing baseball or coming home, familiarity always feels nice. The boys lost their first game last week. They're up 23 and down 1.

Paper work

Working at a paper feels a unique experience. I've really enjoyed the PUSH to get out there four-five times a day. Though I'm often on a time crunch I get to meet and speak with a plethora of people in the area. Each deserving of a story. I'm starting to get a handle on the type of story I'd like to sink my feet into while I'm here. It's an exciting spot to roast in.

Yesterday I started my summer internship at the Sandusky Register in northern Ohio along Lake Erie. Much of what is here I have yet to find but with two days worth of assignments I'm feeling excited about what's to become of this summer. Working at a paper already feels heaps different than being in school. Instead of dedicating four of five weeks to a story we have an afternoon. It's a little about a lot instead of a lot about a little. The assignments yesterday included a shoot at a Civil War Encampment and a bike parade during Ohio Bike Week.

In one of my courses we were asked to present an image that inspired us along the way. I presented the following images that were taken by Eugenio Alfonso, a native Bolivian now living in Ciudad Oculta, Argentina. The images are the remains of Eugenio's mother. When Eugenio and his family could no longer afford the rent-price of the grave-site they were forced to dig up the coffin and transplant it to a communal grave site. He took these images out of love and admiration for his mom.

Eugenio is part of a photography group, PH15, which is led by Martin Rosenthal. The objective of the group is to inspire teenagers growing up in working class neighborhoods that surround Buenos Aires to empower themselves through the use of photography. The class is taught on weekends in Ciudad Oculta, translating to Forbidden City. It is the poorest and most dangerous neighborhood and also coined as an Emergency Town. The neighborhood was given its name, Ciudad Oculta, resulting from the late 1950s when the Argentinean government constructed a wall bordering the city and hiding it from those driving past the city when heading to Buenos Aires from the airport.

Going across "the bridge" to Sausalito for a break, coffee or lunch is a must do for anybody who spends a day/lifetime in San Francisco. Although biking/moto-biking are strongly recommended vehicles to traverse the bridge, walking it is also fantastic.

Bruce first introduced himself to me by asking me out for coffee. He caught me off guard when he mentioned that I didn't need to decide that particular instant, I could decide over coffee. He used his alias when we first exchanged names, then on the f-train to his dispensary destination he told me who he really was: a poet who had fallen in love 152 times and 152 mistakes were why he'd lost each. He asked me to photograph him when he discovered my not-so-hidden camera in my bag. His only hope was that he wouldn't see himself sick in the images.
